To Keep or not To Keep...The Reality of Resolutions

To Keep or Not to Keep: The

Reality of Resolutions

We’re all familiar with the time-honored tradition of people committing to goals at the start of a new year.  We’re all probably just as aware that the majority of those people do not continue the pursuit of those goals much beyond the end of January.  Because we truly want this to be your best year yet, we decided to take a few moments to jot down some tips for making...and keeping...those resolutions of yours.

Determine your “why”

Friedrich Nietzsche famously said, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”  Whatever your resolution, you can almost count on meeting with an obstacle or two as you work to achieve your goal.  However, if you allow your “why” to be your driving force regardless of the difficulties you encounter, you’ll eventually be successful.

Decide your “how”

Having a plan that details that process of how you will reach your goal is essential to success.  Keep in mind the following:

  • Be realistic We aren’t saying don’t aim high.  We aren’t saying don’t have big dreams, but if you truly want to reach that for which you’re striving, choose to work toward things that are achievable.  For example, instead of saying I’m going to lose 10 pounds in a week, decide that you will work to lose a pound a week for 10 weeks.
  • Be specific When we don’t expressly state our goals, we rarely achieve them.  If you would like to exercise more this year, for instance, decide what days you plan to do it, for how long, and even where you will exercise.
  • Be accountable It’s a rare person with the willpower to fight alone, so choose someone that you trust to be your “accountability partner,” that person who periodically checks in on your progress and perhaps may even decide to work toward the same goal right alongside you. You’ll likely find you’re more motivated in the long run to continue when you know someone is watching and rooting for you!
