A Community That Cares

A Community That  Cares

There are nearly 1,000 non-profits in Grand Traverse County, nearly 100 of which are designated as “public charities.”  We are blessed to live in a place where giving is at the center of what we do.  A few short weeks ago, we were fortunate to be able to participate in the 2017 Circle of Friends Luncheon benefitting the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center.  As we listened to the speakers share their touching stories and looked out over the crowd of attendees, we were struck by the reality that we truly do live in a community where giving is a priority.  In gratitude for your generosity, we thought we would take a few moments and talk about how we think giving has genuinely made this a better place to live and raise our families. Blessings in a Backpack provides food to the                                                                                              children and families of TCAPS.  Kate has been                                                                                            privileged to volunteer with them for the last two                                                                                        school years.

First, our region’s desire to donate to worthwhile causes is the initial step toward meaningful change.  Instead of waiting for another to do the work needed to benefit others, we all take up the causes dearest to us and make helping our neighbors our personal mission.  Though it may be a trite expression, every little bit truly does help.  We, as a community, understand that and are doing our part as individuals to combine what we each have to offer in an effort to bring good to us all.

Holly has been active for a number of years as a volunteer with the TBCAC and is a proud member of team Zero! She currently serves as chair of the TBCAC Facilities Board and is the secretary for the Executive Committee, as well!

Second, when we, as parents, choose to give, we teach our children, through example, the value and importance of philanthropy.  In this way, we can ensure that the causes that we support today will be able to continue, and perhaps expand, their efforts tomorrow.   Thank you for making sure that the work can continue!

Finally, giving is simply one of the best things that we can do for ourselves.  A study conducted by the staff at the University of British Columbia, in cooperation with Harvard University business professors, reveals that regardless of whether someone is rich or poor and donates a little or a lot, people are happier giving to others than they are spending money on themselves.  Also, philanthropic giving, whether of time or money, lowers blood pressure while simultaneously activating the reward center of the brain and aiding in the release of the “feel good” chemicals to the brain: dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin.   We are a stronger, happier, healthier community because there are so many who make giving a priority.  Kudos to you!

In the hope of continuing the work begun by each person who has ever given of their time, money and talents to benefit another, we promise that when your give us a referral, WE WILL GIVE BACK:

TRAVERSE Bay CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER

The Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center does wonderful work helping children and families who are living through the tragedy of abuse. That is why we decided  to donate a portion of our income from selling homes to support their mission of helping the children in our region!
