Enjoy the View: Looking Toward the Year Ahead

Another year is rapidly approaching its end, which provides an opportunity with the dawn of the new year to plan for a fresh start and decide where you hope to be by this time next year.  We thought we’d take the opportunity in this month’s newsletter to share a plan to help you...plan. J

Strategize

First, take some time to look over the past year and assess your activities.  Continue what worked; cut what didn’t (or re-work it to bring effectiveness).  Then, spend some time simply brainstorming.  Jot down a list of all the things that you want to accomplish.  Don’t overthink it.  Now isn’t the time for details so much as dreaming.

Compartmentalize

Once you have made your list of goals, give it a once-over to ensure that you have included something for every area of your life.  This helps achieve balance; you don’t want a boat leaning heavily to one side, and your life shouldn’t either.

Prioritize

This is the part of the process where you take your list of dreams and decide on deadlines and timelines.  You need to determine what you will do first and what waits.  Re-order your list accordingly, from the earliest goal that you want to achieve to the last dream you’ll realize before the end of the year.  Make sure that any deadlines that you choose are realistic and achievable.

Publicize

You’ve made your plan, now make it public.  Vision boards, big or small, help keep your goals in the forefront of your life.  Even if you take your simple hand-written, prioritized list and tape it to the bathroom mirror, you’ll be taking a big step to making your dreams a reality: see it, think about it, achieve it!  Another avenue to venture down is making the bold choice and asking a friend to be your accountability partner.  As such, whomever you choose will be tasked with checking in with you regularly to see where you are with each of your goals to keep you focused and on-task.
